How do I add an invoice-level discount, taxes, and notes?

Use the Discount & notes step to discount the whole invoice, add invoice-level taxes, and write customer and private notes.

The Discount & notes step (step 4 of the wizard) applies to the invoice as a whole, rather than to a single line. It is where you take money off the total, add invoice-wide taxes, and write the notes your customer sees.

Invoice-level discount

Apply one discount across the entire invoice:

  • Fixed amount — a set amount off the total, or
  • Percentage — a percentage off the total.

Use an invoice-level discount for something like a whole-order promotion. For discounts that only apply to certain items, use per-line discounts on the Line items step instead.

Invoice-level taxes

Add zero or more taxes that apply to the whole invoice. If your company has a default tax configured, it is seeded here at the invoice level, while individual lines start tax-free.

Notes

There are three note fields on this step:

  • Customer notes — visible to the recipient on the invoice.
  • Terms & conditions — also visible to the recipient.
  • Private notes — internal only. These are never sent to the customer or shown on the invoice.

Keep anything you do not want the customer to see in Private notes. Customer notes and Terms & conditions both appear on the document the recipient receives.

Notes can default from your Settings, so recurring wording (like standard terms) is filled in for you and can be edited per invoice.
