How do I collect a payment in a document?
Add a Pay button, charge a fixed amount or a linked table total, and choose when to collect.
You can take a payment as part of signing in two ways:
- Add a Payment block (a Pay button) — the explicit way, covered here.
- Turn on Collect payment for this block on a pricing table or quote — pays that block's total after signing.
Connect Stripe first
Payments go into your own Stripe account. Before you can collect, connect Stripe under Settings → Payments. Until it's connected, the Pay button tells signers online payment isn't available.
Add a Payment block
- In the editor, open the Doc Blocks tab and drag the Payment block (under Data) onto the document.
- Select it to open its settings in the right sidebar.
Set the amount
Under Amount, choose how the charge is calculated:
- Fixed amount — enter the amount yourself. This works even on a plain uploaded PDF with no table. You must enter an amount greater than zero before you can send.
- Link to a table — pick a pricing, invoice, or quote block in the document; the Pay button charges that block's total. If there's no table yet, add one first.
When you use Fixed amount, a Currency section appears — pick a preset (USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, INR, JPY, SGD) or Custom (code and symbol). In Link to a table mode the linked block's currency is used.
Choose when to collect
Under When to collect:
- After signing completes (default) — recipients pay once the document is fully signed.
- Before completion — the envelope is not marked completed until payment is made.
Labels
Under Labels, set the Title, the Button label (for example, Pay now), and an optional Description.
The amount is verified on the server
The Pay button never sends the charge amount itself — it's always resolved and verified on the server before charging, and card payments are processed securely by Stripe.
Placing more than one Pay button
There is one payment per envelope. The primary Pay button is the first one in the document (by reading order); only it is editable. Any extra copies mirror the primary's amount, timing, and paid state — so you can place a Pay button in more than one spot and they all stay in sync. To change the amount, edit the primary; to keep just one, delete the copies.
What the signer sees
At the button's position the signer sees a Pay card:
- If it collects after signing, the amount shows with an Available after signing state until they finish.
- When it's ready, they click Pay and complete the card payment in a secure Stripe dialog.
- Once paid, the card switches to Paid for everyone — no reload needed.
Track what you collect
Every payment taken on a document appears in Document payments, with the payer, status, date, and amount.
