How do I organise products into categories?

Group your products into single-select, nested categories for easier browsing and reporting.

Categories give your product catalogue a structure. Each product can belong to one category, and categories can be nested, so you can build a hierarchy such as Hardware → Fasteners → Screws.

Product categories are separate from expense categories. These categories only apply to inventory products.

Create a category

Categories live under Inventory → Categories.

  1. Go to Inventory → Categories.
  2. Enter a Name (required, up to 150 characters).
  3. Optionally choose a Parent category to nest this one underneath it.
  4. Set a Sort order to control where it appears in the list.
  5. Save the category.

Assign a category to a product

A product's category is set in the Organization section of the product drawer. Each product has a single category — see Create a product for the full drawer walkthrough.

Use the Parent field to build as deep a tree as you need. Because each product picks just one category, put products at the most specific level that fits.
