What does the audit trail record?
A breakdown of the events, signer details, and device data captured for every envelope.
The audit trail captures a detailed, time-stamped account of an envelope's entire life. It is organised into a few sections so you can quickly see the overall lifecycle as well as the fine detail of each action.
The lifecycle summary
At the top, the audit trail shows the envelope's high-level journey:
Created → Sent → Viewed → Signed → Completed
This gives you an at-a-glance view of how far along the envelope is.
Signers and recipients
For each person on the envelope you'll see:
- Their recipient type (for example, needs to sign, in-person signer, or receives a copy).
- An ID verified badge if their identity was confirmed.
- A Sent → Viewed → Signed timeline for that individual.
- A decline reason, if they declined to sign.
The activity timeline
Every meaningful event is logged with the exact time it happened. Recorded events include:
- Created, Sent, Delivered, Viewed, Signed, Declined, Completed, Voided, and Reminder sent.
Each entry also captures the context of the action:
- Browser and device used.
- IP address.
- Approximate location — city, region, and country.
Why this matters
This device and location data is what makes the record tamper-evident and defensible. It shows not just that a document was signed, but where and how — the evidence you'd rely on if a signature is ever questioned.
Email delivery
The audit trail also includes an email delivery table showing every message sent for the envelope — who it went To, the Type of email, its delivery Status, and when it was Sent. See Email activity for more on this.
